ab exercises

Whether it's at a dinner party, after teaching a strength and conditioning class, or in sorting through emails, the question I'm asked most often in my fitness profession always relates to which ab exercises will help someone get 6 pack abs.

Although every person's case should be individualized (taking into account current fitness level, health history, injuries, etc.) there are several key elements to core training that must be addressed.

Too often I see men and women performing abdominal exercises that really only target the "beach muscles" or the front of the abdomen.

Althought these are muscles of the core that we do want to strengthen, so many people present with mobility, flexibility, and postural issues that they are usually making matters worse for themselves while increasing the chances of injury.

The further away from good posture that we get, the more compression we experience at joints throughout the body. With increased compression comes decreased stability.

With the core, the area most often impacted would be the lower back via herniated discs in the vertebral column.

To combat the risk of injury and to get a strong and flat belly, it's imperative that you use lower back exercises and oblique exercises in addition to the more traditional stomach exercises to create the most well-rounded effort.

So, what are the "right abdominal exercises" to lose stomach fat?

There is a long list of core exercises and abdominal programs that will strengthen and tone the muscles of the stomach and midsection.

In order to reap the greatest benefit from these flat belly exercises and sculpt six pack abs, it is essential that your weight training program include a focus on proper movement.

Restrictions in flexibility of the muscles or in joint mobility can hinder muscle activation making all the reps in the world nearly worthless without that proper movement.

A section of your warm-up routine should be dedicated to addressing any muscular imbalances assisting in improved muscle recruitment.

The more muscle activated the right way, the faster your results will be.

Don't forget that although you're now able to focus on toning and strengthening your core muscles, you won't be able to see those abdominal muscles in the mirror without focus on proper nutrition for women or for men and on your cardiovascular exercise to help burn excess carbohydrates and fats.
