Basketball Weight Training...

You'll have to be involved in basketball weight training if you want to be at your best on the court.

With everyone's minds on the current NBA Finals series between the Celtics and the Lakers, it's tough as a strength coach not to take a closer look at what allows these players to excel.

I'm not talking only about their heart, dedication, and obvious talent, but the preparation they put into the basketball conditioning programs their strength coaches have designed.

The Celtics, whether you think they are "old" or "experienced" wouldn't be playing at this level at this point in the season if they hadn't been able to avoid or at least lessen the impact of injuries.

We can thank their strength coach Bryan Doo for that.

Preventing Basketball Injuries

I've seen many talented basketball players who weren't flexible through their muscles or mobile at their joints.

When we think of mobility at specific joints, we're often talking about the ankle and the hips.

If these two areas of the body aren't moving efficiently, the body will look to move the next closest joint - the knee or the lower back - and usually not in a way we'd want those areas to move.

Think Shaun Livingston of the Clippers from a few years back.. (not for the squeamish)

So, to prevent injuries like these, it is important for male and female players of any age, to not only concentrate on basic weight lifting exercises, but also on their mechanics and overall function.

The muscles have to be strong enough to stabilize the joints. But, the joints have to be mobile enough for the muscles to appreciate any strength through greater ranges of motion.

Proper mechanics coupled with a comprehensive basketball weight training program along with the coaches input on X's, O's, and mindset should lead to a happy and healthy basketball experience.
